See What Our Customers Say

"Lotus is a top-notch operation in Iceland. It is easy to get to right from the airport as a tram will pick you up and drop you right at their doorstep. Their staff is very friendly and helpful. If you're not familiar with the countryside I would recommend GPS but don't fully trust it 100%. We hired the all-wheel drive Volkswagen 9 seat van. It had plenty of room but it is not your luxury van. It did get the job done. I highly recommend Lotus car rental Iceland."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are F-Roads in Iceland and can I drive a camper on them?

F-Roads are unpaved, mountain roads in Iceland’s Highlands which can only be used during certain times of the year and in 4x4 vehicles with high ground clearance due to the rugged terrain.

All of the campers we rent out at Lotus Car Rental feature 4WD and are F-Road compliant, allowing you to explore Iceland’s most remote and beautiful landscapes safely.

Read more about driving on F-Roads on our blog.

Where can I find campsites in Iceland?

With roughly 200 campsites, Iceland provides ample overnight options, mainly situated along its scenic coast and the Ring Road. These vary widely, from simple, facility-free pitches to advanced sites with modern amenities. The surge in campervan popularity has led to a corresponding increase in campsite development, serving a diverse crowd of Icelanders and global tourists alike.

Iceland also boasts three National Parks—Þingvellir, Vatnajökull, and Snæfellsjökull—each showcasing unique landscapes and activities. The majority are camper-friendly and conveniently located along major routes.

What is the minimum age to rent a camper van?

There are different requirements depending on the type of camper van you are renting:

  • Dacia Duster, RAV4 Roof-Tent Models: Minimum age is 20 years.
  • California Models and Hilux Campers: Minimum age is 23 years.
  • All drivers must have held their license for a minimum of 12 months.

Young Driver Fee: If you do not meet the minimum age or the minimum time frame of 12 months, but have a valid driver’s license, you may rent a car by paying a Young Driver Fee.

Is there a minimum rental period for camper vans?

The minimum rental period for one of our campers is 24 hours.

What documents will I need to rent a camper van in Iceland?

Before you get behind the wheel of your camper van, we’ll need to see the following documentation:

  • A valid passport for all drivers of the camper van.
  • A valid driving license for all drivers.
  • A valid credit card.

We accept all foreign licenses as long as it is in English, or has Latin characters. If your driving license does not follow this format, remember to bring an international driving license.

How do I pay for my camper van rental?

Credit and debit cards are accepted methods of payment.

However, if you choose to use a debit card, a deposit will be collected and then refunded if the car is returned in the same condition as it was rented, with no additional costs or fees. We accept all credit cards. Please contact us for further information.

How do I pick up and return my camper van?

One of our team members will be waiting for you at the arrival hall of your airport and will take you to our office to complete the paperwork. After your journey has ended, you can return your rental camper van to our office at any time. Alternatively, you can arrange for the vehicle to be delivered to a location that suits you, if arranged in advance.

Do I need to buy a camping card alongside my campervan rental?

Before you begin your campervan holiday in Iceland, you should plan which campsites you would like to stay in.

If you’re camping in Iceland, you can obtain a camping card, which grants you free access to campsites across Iceland. Whilst this isn’t a necessity, you might find a camping card to be the most cost-effective option if you plan to stay in multiple sites during your trip.

Do I need insurance?

You are required to purchase Third Party Liability insurance as a minimum when renting a camper van in Iceland. The level of additional rental car insurance you might need in Iceland, such as gravel or sand and ash insurance, is dependent upon where you intend to travel in your rental car. You might find you want more insurance if you will be driving in rural locations.
