Around seven years ago I moved from Florida to Iceland. It is the third country I have called home, since I am originally from South America, so moving somewhere new was nothing new to me. Iceland still surprised me: the ever changing weather, the endless days, the short ones. I never expected to fall in love with nature so much that I would go camping, yet now I look forward to it every summer.

Those seven years have also been my years at Lotus Car Rental. I started at the counter, working directly with clients, and today I am the Brand Manager. All my tips come from someone who had never experienced a true winter with snow. In our blogs you will get real tips about renting a car, driving in Iceland, and reality versus expectations.

Go beyond the Golden Circle: Snaefellsnes, the Westfjords, Vestmannaeyjar. Make sure to book your rental and hotels ahead in the summer. Stay flexible in the winter, this is the shoulder season.

Iceland is expensive. More expensive still is declining insurance without checking whether your credit card covers gravel or F-roads. Believe it or not, a client once returned a car to tell me a horse had bitten the roof and damaged the paint. That one I did not see coming.

Dynjandi, the Westfjords waterfall most visitors never reach. Worth every gravel kilometer.

Hiking taught me this country, skiing at Blafjoll taught me its winters. Next: Hornstrandir, reachable only by boat.

Favorite car? The VW California camper, for waking up wherever the weather is good, or the Land Cruiser 150 for F-roads and unpredictable weather. Let's face it, that is the only predictable part of Iceland.
